Technology developments have improved energy efficiency and control in air compressors, and in compressed air systems as a whole. Many changes that have come about have enhanced overall energy efficiency.
Fixed speed compressors run at a fixed and regular speed which produced a constant amount of compressed air. Practically, however, the compressor runs to fill up the receiving tank and stops when it is full. It will restart when the receiving tank is empty as the air is used up. The start and stop process of the compressor will go on till the compressor is shut off. This process, leads to an excessive use of energy.
In contrast, variable speed compressors improves energy consumption. These compressors spin more slowly, producing less air, consuming less energy. Variable speed compressors regulate their speed to produce only the air that is required.
